Objectives:

  • To recognise the suffix –ing.
  • To add the suffix –ing correctly to different stem words.

At this stage your child should be starting to read and spell a wide selection of words. By learning the rules for adding ‘–ing’ to words that your child can already read and spell, your child will greatly increase the bank of words that they know.

The suffix ‘-ing’ is used to change verbs to the present tense. There are three different ways to add ‘-ing’ to words. The first one is very simple. In words such as jump, walk or play we simply add ‘-ing’ to the end. In other words such as hop or tap we need to double the final consonant before adding ‘-ing’, i.e. hopping and tapping. Words that end in –e must have the final –e removed before adding ‘-ing’, i.e. love becomes loving and care becomes caring.

At this stage we will only be focusing on adding –ing to words that do not need any alterations.
