• To discriminate, read and spell words with the long vowel sound ‘a’.

Parent Notes:

By the summer term of Year One, your child should be secure in their knowledge of CVC, CCVC and CVCC words. The next stage in their phonics (letter sound) learning is alternative spelling patterns for each of the five long-vowel phonemes.

This unit focuses on the long ‘a’. E.g. skate, spade, wait, nail.

Try to share books with your child as often as you can. Bedtime is always a good time to look at a book together. Encourage your child to point out words with the long ‘a’ sound. Examine the different spellings of words containing the long ‘a’ sound. Group words together (see the cards in this unit), play a game where you take turns to think of words that contain the long ‘a’.
