Parent Notes:

By the spring term of Year One, your child should be secure in their knowledge of CVC words. The next stage in their phonics (letter sound) learning is consonant clusters at the beginning of words.

This unit focuses on blends at the beginning of words that have r as the second letter, e.g. tr- in train, cr- in crawl, or br- in brown.

Try to share books with your child as often as you can. Bedtime is always a good time to look at a book together. Encourage your child to point out words with initial blends containing r. Group words together (see the cards in this unit), play a game where you take turns to think of words that begin with the same consonant cluster.
